The great maritime flag is made up of a set of colourful and distinctive flags, each representing a specific letter or number. By combining these flags, ships can form visual messages that can be interpreted by other ships, coastal semaphores and maritime authorities. This enables fast and efficient communication between ships, particularly where other methods of communication, such as radio, may be limited or unavailable.
The system is based on the International Code of Signals, which assigns to each letter of the alphabet and to each digit a specific sequence of flags. Each flag is designed with bright colours and easy-to-identify patterns, making it easy to recognise even from a distance. When hoisted in a visible position on the ship, these flags enable other sailors to quickly identify the nationality, name and other relevant information about the ship, thus contributing to safe navigation and the prevention of incidents at sea.
