Anodes play a sacrificial protection role by corroding in place of the metal components they are designed to protect.
They must be regularly inspected, cleaned, and replaced once significantly worn. Beyond approximately 60% depletion, their protective effectiveness can no longer be guaranteed.
In seawater, the use of zinc or aluminum alloy anodes is recommended. At equivalent performance levels, aluminum anodes are about three times lighter than zinc anodes, offer a higher electrochemical potential, and have a lower environmental impact. They are particularly well suited for protecting aluminum hulls.
For exclusive use in freshwater environments, magnesium anodes are preferred.
